New York medical license renewal
A New York medical license is for life, but you can only practice with a current registration, renewed every two years for $600. New York has no general CME-hours rule; instead it requires specific trainings and a physician profile update. Here are the steps, from the Office of the Professions and New York Education Law.

How to renew, step by step
- Update your New York physician profile; renewal asks you to attest it was updated within the last 6 months.
- Make sure your mandated trainings are current: infection control every 4 years and, if you prescribe controlled substances (including under a facility DEA number), 3 hours of prescriber education every 3 years. Child abuse identification training is one-time for physicians, but every mandated reporter must complete New York's updated curriculum by November 17, 2026. See New York requirements.

- Answer the conviction, charge and discipline questions and the citizenship question.
- Pay $600 by Visa, MasterCard or American Express and keep your registration certificate.

- Infection control training every 4 years.
- For prescribers with a DEA registration, including residents prescribing under a facility DEA number: 3 hours of prescriber education every 3 years.
