Iowa CME Requirements (2026): Physicians, NPs, PAs, CRNAs & CAAs
Iowa regulates five clinician professions through different boards, each with its own continuing-education rules — physicians (MD/DO), nurse practitioners (APRN/NP), physician assistants (PA), nurse anesthetists (CRNA), and anesthesiologist assistants (CAA, in the states that license them). Below, each profession's total hours, mandated topics, opioid/controlled-substance rule, and tracking, plus the one federal rule they share. Last reviewed 2026-08-24.
Physicians (MD / DO)
Set by the Iowa Board of Medicine.
General CME: 40 hours every 2 years.
Opioid / controlled substance
2 hours every 5 years — CDC guideline for prescribing opioids for chronic pain. Trigger: if the physician prescribed opioids.
✓ No board pre-approval gate: No board pre-approval — generic ACCME Category 1 counts (CDC-guideline / chronic-pain content).

Nurse Practitioners (APRN / NP)
Set by the Iowa Board of Nursing (Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner / ARNP), Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: 36 contact hours of board-approved continuing education per 3-year renewal cycle (same triennial CE mandate as the RN license). Maintaining current ARNP national professional certification/recertification counts as the full 36 contact hours and satisfies CE for both the ARNP and RN license renewals. 655 IAC ch. 5 (CE) / DIAL ARNP CE page.
Opioid / controlled substance
2 hours, every 3 years, for holders of controlled-substance prescriptive authority. Timing is built into the free multi-state planner.

Physician Assistants (PA)
Set by the Iowa Board of Physician Associates (formerly Board of Physician Assistants), Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: 100 hours of board-approved CE per 2-year (biennial) compliance period, Oct 1 - Sep 30 two years later. Minimum 50 hours must be AAPA/AMA/AOA/AAFP/ACCME-designated Category I; remaining 50 hours may be Category I or Category II as accepted by NCCPA. Current NCCPA certification for the period is accepted as proof of meeting the CME requirement. Up to 50 excess hours may carry over one cycle. Iowa Administrative Code r. 481-782.2 & 481-782.3.

Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA)
Set by the Iowa Board of Nursing, Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: CRNAs are licensed as ARNPs (one of four roles, 481 IAC 621.2(1)'b'). The ARNP license expires with the RN license and renewal requires current certification with a national professional certification organization — the rule names the 'National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists' (481 IAC 621.1 definitions; 621.3(5); 621.4(2)). RN/ARNP CE: 'License renewal requires the verifiable completion of 36 contact hours or 3.6 CEUs of credit or an exemption within the renewal period' (481 IAC 619.2(1)). Nursing rules were transferred from 655 IAC to 481 IAC (ch. 617-621) effective 6/4/2025 (ARC 9164C; IAC Supplement 6/11/25).
NBCRNA recertification is accepted in place of state CE. 'Current national certification or recertification related to the practice of nursing. The national certification or recertification is recognized as 36 contact hours of continuing education' (481 IAC 619.2(3)'h'). DIAL: 'The continuing education required for ARNP certification meets the continuing education requirement for ARNP license renewal and RN license renewal. Documentation of current ARNP certification verifies compliance.' NBCRNA is an enumerated national professional certification organization (481 IAC 621.1). Does NOT satisfy the 2-hr opioid CE or mandatory reporter training, which are separate conditions. National layer: NBCRNA continued certification (4-year cycle: 60 Class A + 40 Class B credits, MAC Check).
Opioid / controlled substance
2 hours, every 3 years, for every CRNA in the state. Timing is built into the free multi-state planner.

Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAA)
Not authorized to practice in Iowa.
Certified anesthesiologist assistants cannot practice in Iowa — there is no CAA license, certification or physician-delegation pathway, so there are no state CE requirements to track here. No pending licensure bill was found as of August 2026. NCCAA certification requirements (50 CME hours every 2 years + the CDQ exam) still apply nationally.
Federal — DEA MATE Act (all professions)
One rule is the same for everyone below. Every DEA-registered prescriber — physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and any CRNA or CAA who holds a DEA registration — must complete a one-time 8-hour training on treating patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, as a condition of DEA registration/renewal (since June 27, 2023). It is federal, applies in every state, and does not replace Iowa's recurring opioid/controlled-substance CME.
