Opioid CME doesn’t line up
across states
Every board layers its own opioid / controlled-substance rule on top of the one-time federal DEA MATE Act — different hours, different clocks, and some boards accept only a state-approved course. Three things make it hard to manage by hand.
Federal on top of state
The DEA MATE Act is a one-time 8-hour federal requirement. Each state then adds its own controlled-substance CME — different hours, different rules — that you still satisfy separately.
Board-approval “gate” states
A handful of boards accept only their own board-approved or state-specific opioid course. A generic ACCME course won’t satisfy them — and it’s easy to find out too late, at renewal.
One-time vs recurring clocks
Some states want it once; most want it every renewal, on cycles of one to five years. Hold several licenses and the same requirement runs on different clocks — easy to miss, easy to over-buy.
