Nevada CME Requirements (2026): Physicians, NPs, PAs, CRNAs & CAAs
Nevada regulates five clinician professions through different boards, each with its own continuing-education rules — physicians (MD/DO), nurse practitioners (APRN/NP), physician assistants (PA), nurse anesthetists (CRNA), and anesthesiologist assistants (CAA, in the states that license them). Below, each profession's total hours, mandated topics, opioid/controlled-substance rule, and tracking, plus the one federal rule they share. Last reviewed 2026-08-24.
Physicians (MD / DO)
Set by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners.
General CME: 40 hours every 2 years.
Opioid / controlled substance
2 hours per biennium — misuse/abuse of CS, opioid prescribing, or addiction. Trigger: MDs registered to dispense CS.
✓ No board pre-approval gate: No board pre-approval — generic AMA PRA Category 1 accepted; topic must be CS misuse / opioid prescribing / addiction.

Nurse Practitioners (APRN / NP)
Set by the Nevada State Board of Nursing — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: 45 hours of continuing education per biennial (birthday-based) renewal that must be directly related to the APRN's role or population of focus; may include the RN renewal CE. No separate mandatory general-pharmacology hour requirement exists in Nevada. Citation: NAC 632.291(1)(a)(3); NRS 632.343(1).
Opioid / controlled substance
2 hours, every 2 years, for holders of controlled-substance prescriptive authority. Timing is built into the free multi-state planner.

Tracking: Self-attestation of CE at biennial birthday-based renewal on Board forms; Board performs random audits requiring authenticated certificates of completion (title, provider, approving body, date, license number, contact hours) covering the 24 months preceding the licensee's most recent birthday; licensees must retain CE documentation for 4 years. Physician Assistants (PA)
Set by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners (PAs supervised by DOs are licensed/regulated by the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine) — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: 40 hours of continuing medical education per biennium, as defined by the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) or documented as AMA Category 1 credit. Citation: NAC 630.350(1). (Osteopathic board: 20 hours per year AAPA-defined CME plus current NCCPA certification, NAC 633.285(3).)
Opioid / controlled substance
2 hours, every 2 years, for holders of controlled-substance prescriptive authority. Timing is built into the free multi-state planner.

Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA)
Set by the Nevada State Board of Nursing — certificate of registration as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (NRS 632.2395; NAC 632.495-632.550) — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: NAC 632.540: (1) CRNA certificate 'expires biennially upon expiration of the holder's license as a registered nurse'; (2) renewed upon (a) evidence of RN renewal, (b) 'evidence of current certification as a nurse anesthetist from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists', and (c) 'documentation of 45 contact hours of continuing education related to practice as a nurse anesthetist'; (3) 'If the national recertification occurs within 1 year before the nurse anesthetist's birthday, the Board will consider it sufficient evidence of: (a) The successful completion of 40 contact hours of continuing education related to practice as a nurse anesthetist; and (b) Validation of his or her professional practice during the previous 2 years' (as amended R060-23, eff. 6/20/2024). NAC 632.545: certificate 'expires automatically whenever there is a lapse in his or her national certification'. Underlying RN: 30 hours/2 yrs (NRS 632.343(1)) plus NRS 632.343(3) mandated courses.
NBCRNA recertification counts toward state CE (partial). Current NBCRNA certification is mandatory for renewal and lapse auto-expires the certificate (NAC 632.540(2)(b), 632.545). NBCRNA recertification within 1 year before the birthday is deemed evidence of 40 contact hours (NAC 632.540(3)) — 5 hours short of the 45-hour requirement in (2)(c); the regulation does not say whether the remaining 5 hours must be documented separately. DISCREPANCY flag: 45 vs 40 (likely a drafting artifact of the R060-23 amendment raising 40 to 45). Recertification outside that 1-year window does not substitute for hours. National layer: NBCRNA continued certification (4-year cycle: 60 Class A + 40 Class B credits, MAC Check).

Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAA)
Set by the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners (simultaneous licensure available with the State Board of Osteopathic Medicine, NRS 630.26835) — separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics.
General CE: Board regulation (LCB adopted 2024, codified in NAC 630 AA sections; 'Sec. 11'): AA must complete 40 hours of CE per biennial licensing period – 40 if licensed in first 6 months of the period, 30 / 20 / 10 if licensed in the 2nd/3rd/4th 6-month block – and hold current NCCAA certification; licenses renew by June 30 of each odd-numbered year (2025-2027 cycle per board site). Up to 10 hrs credit for performing medical review for the Board (Sec. 12 / NAC 630.920).
NCCAA recertification counts toward state CE (partial). Current NCCAA certification is required for renewal in addition to the 40-hour CE requirement; the regulation does not state that NCCAA certification alone replaces the hours. National layer: NCCAA certification (50 CME hours every 2 years — 40 anesthesia + 10 general — plus the CDQ exam).
Opioid / controlled substance
No standalone state opioid/controlled-substance CE mandate identified for this profession. The federal DEA MATE Act (one-time 8-hour training) still applies if you hold a DEA registration.

Federal — DEA MATE Act (all professions)
One rule is the same for everyone below. Every DEA-registered prescriber — physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and any CRNA or CAA who holds a DEA registration — must complete a one-time 8-hour training on treating patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, as a condition of DEA registration/renewal (since June 27, 2023). It is federal, applies in every state, and does not replace Nevada's recurring opioid/controlled-substance CME. Notes (physician data)
- WMD/bioterrorism course REPEALED by AB 56 effective 1/1/2026. Ethics may be met by pain-management/SBIRT substitute.
- DOs: the figures above are the allopathic board's (NRS ch. 630). Osteopathic requirements now diverge — AB 56 + reg R092-25 move osteopathic renewal from annual to biennial (40 hours per 2-year period, was 35/year), raise the AOA Category 1-A minimum from 10 to 20, and raise substance-abuse/opioid CME from 2 to 4 hours.
