Michigan CME requirements 2026 rules for physicians, NPs, PAs, CRNAs and CAAs
Michigan regulates five clinician professions through different boards, each with its own continuing-education rules: physicians (MD/DO), nurse practitioners (APRN/NP), physician assistants (PA), nurse anesthetists (CRNA) and anesthesiologist assistants (CAA), who practice here under an anesthesiologist's delegation. Below, each profession's total hours, mandated topics, opioid/controlled-substance rule, and tracking, plus the one federal rule they share. Physician rules reviewed October 13, 2026.
Physicians (MD / DO)
Set by the Michigan Board of Medicine. Verified October 13, 2026.
General CME: 150 hours every 3 years.
Opioid / controlled substance
3 hours every 3 years, pain & symptom management (DO: also 1 hour controlled-substance). Trigger: all.
✓ No board pre-approval needed: generic ACCME Category 1 counts (AOA equivalency for DO board).

Nurse Practitioners (APRN / NP)
Set by the Michigan Board of Nursing (LARA, Bureau of Professional Licensing), separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics. Verified July 20, 2026.
General CE: 25 CE hours per 2-year cycle for the underlying RN license (R 338.10601/10602). APRN specialty certification (NP/CNM/CNS) renews on the same schedule and requires only obtaining/maintaining national certification from an approved body (R 338.10405b) - no separate state CE-hour count for the specialty. Max 12 hours in any 24-hour period; category caps apply.
Opioid / controlled substance
A board-required course (no set hour count), one time, for holders of controlled-substance prescriptive authority. Timing is built into the free multi-state planner.

Physician Assistants (PA)
Set by the Michigan Task Force on Physician's Assistants (under the Board of Medicine and Board of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery), LARA, Bureau of Professional Licensing, separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics. Verified July 20, 2026.
General CE: No general CE/CME hour mandate. Per LARA PA Licensing Guide/FAQ: 'Michigan statute and administrative rules do not require continuing education for renewal.' PAs attest to maintaining competence but need not demonstrate hours. Cycle moved to 3 years effective June 1, 2022.
Opioid / controlled substance
A board-required course (no set hour count), one time, for holders of controlled-substance prescriptive authority. Timing is built into the free multi-state planner.

Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA)
Set by the Michigan Board of Nursing (LARA Bureau of Professional Licensing): RN license plus nurse anesthetist specialty certification (R 338.10404 / R 338.10405), separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics. Verified August 24, 2026.
General CE: RN license: 'not less than 25 hours of continuing education' in the 2 years before expiration, of which 'not less than 2 hours ... in pain and pain symptom management' (R 338.10601/10602). Nurse anesthetist specialty certification: 'renewal must correspond with the same schedule as the license renewal'; applicant 'shall have obtained recertification or maintained certification, within the 2-year period immediately before the application, from the NBCRNA, or a successor organization'; retain evidence 4 years (R 338.10405). Initial specialty certification requires current NBCRNA certification (R 338.10404).
NBCRNA recertification counts toward state CE (partial). NBCRNA maintenance is the entire specialty-certification renewal requirement (R 338.10405) but does not replace the 25-hour RN CE, the 2-hour pain hours, implicit bias, or human-trafficking training, which attach to the underlying RN license. NBCRNA Class A credits from ANCC/AANA-accredited providers count toward the 25 hours under R 338.10602 category rules. National layer: NBCRNA continued certification (4-year cycle: 60 Class A + 40 Class B credits, MAC Check).

Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAA)
Set by the State medical board, separate from the physician rules above, with its own hours and topics. Practice pathway: physician delegation. No state CAA license exists; you practice under an anesthesiologist's delegation and the state imposes no CE of its own. Verified August 24, 2026.
General CE: Michigan has no AA license or registration, so no state-mandated CME. ASA and AAAA classify Michigan as a 'delegatory authority' state: CAAs work under a physician's general delegation authority (MCL 333.16215). Maintaining NCCAA certification is a credentialing/employer matter, not a LARA rule.
NCCAA recertification counts toward state CE (partial). No state CME rule exists; NCCAA certification is the only continuing-competence framework in effect (employer/credentialing driven). National layer: NCCAA certification (50 CME hours every 2 years, 40 anesthesia + 10 general, plus the CDQ exam).
Opioid / controlled substance
No standalone state opioid/controlled-substance CE mandate identified for this profession. The federal DEA MATE Act (one-time 8-hour training) still applies if you hold a DEA registration.

Federal: DEA MATE Act (all professions)
One rule is the same for every profession on this page. Every DEA-registered prescriber (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and any CRNA or CAA who holds a DEA registration) must complete a one-time 8-hour training on treating patients with opioid or other substance use disorders, as a condition of DEA registration/renewal (since June 27, 2023). It is federal and applies in every state, and it does not replace Michigan's recurring opioid/controlled-substance CME. A MATE-qualifying accredited course will usually still count toward your state general CME/CE total. How the MATE Act differs from state rules
